18th September – Pirate Night

Tags

Ahoy there me hearties!  It was a super special night tonight organised by Falcon and Komodo in consultation with PLs.  We started the evening by creating some masterful pirate flags (thanks to Emu for a bit of sewing beforehand) and then tried our hand at a floating flagpole (we might need a little more practice at this one).  Then it was off to the spider crawl through challenge and treasure hunting in the park before tucking into some sweet treats (thanks Komodo) to finish off the term!

28th August – Promise & Law

Tags

Tonight we played Scout Law Lilypad Leaping to help us work as a team to remember our scout laws in order.  Then we completed rotational bases with Komodo going over leadership activities we’ve been involved in, Falcon taught us how to say the Scout Promise in all different languages and Echidna and Garlanja running the climate change and coastal areas environmental discussion as part of SIAM15.

21st August – Investiture of our five ‘Scubs’

,

In addition to painting our fabulous new patrol boxes with a bit of help from Raven, we began the night with a very special ceremony.  Five of our scubs (cubs-linking-to-scouts) were invested fully into the scout section.  Ciara, Emily, Tom, Millie and Sophie were very excited to finally become fully fledged scouts.  We held the investiture in the bushland of Mott Park with everyone having glow sticks to help light the way.  After a farewell cub parade from our Group Leader/Cub Leader Hawkeye, each of the scubs was carried through the investiture gateway on a chair chariot by their new patrol members.  Once everyone was into the scout circle each scub wrote their name on the gateway crossbeam – the list is getting long and everyone loves looking at who has gone before.  Emily, Millie and Tom were invested into Penguin Patrol and Ciara and Sophie into Panther Patrol.  As usual there was some excellent descriptors by the PLs as to why their patrol is the best and a general welcoming of all the new scouts.

14th August – Campfire Capers

Tags

We always love a good campfire.  Tonight we learnt how to cut wood with Hawkeye and then built a campfire.  As always there was lots of singing with our linking scubs sharing their favourite song “Da Moose.”  They also joined in our favourites like Cecil was a Caterpillar, National Embalming School, Baby Shark, Roadkill Stew, Found a Peanut and Jumped for 40 000 feet!  There was also the classic Little Green Ball skit by Penguin.  Lots of watermelon applauses all round!

8-9 August – Operation Nighthawk

Our first adventure to Operation Nighthawk (8-9th August 2015) as Victor Troop with only two scouts who had previously participated.  After plenty of planning and packing our intrepid scouts headed west to the Darling Downs Region to the Clifton Airfield for Operation Nighthawk 2015.  This year we entered two patrols (Penguin & Panther) who were supported by Hawkeye, Komodo, Falcon, Emu, Cobra and Adam’s parents (Lisa & Andrew).

After setting up camp and opening parade our scouts headed back to our campsite.  We had a quick turnaround for dinner (chicken pasta casserole) and bundled our scouts into their warm clothes before an early start time of 5.45pm.  The sun setting across the site was really amazing.

For the leaders and parents it was then an evening of relaxing around the fires and catching up with leaders from other troops and perhaps a spot of badge collecting.

For the kids it was an amazing hike through the Darling Downs countryside around the Clifton Airfield.  Navigating their way through the dark and cold (temperature dropped below zero early in the morning) to work as a team and complete the various activity bases.

I’m extremely proud of the efforts of both patrols and the support they gave each other.  It was hard on our PLs (one of whom is 13 and one 12.5) but everyone helped out.

I am especially proud of Panther patrol (nick named the temporary broken patrol) who battled through with Joseph who’d been sick with a throat infection, and Laura with a broken upper arm (still in sling), Mike with a re-injured broken finger and two 10.5 year old scouts none of whom would even consider not participating and one of whom we had to do a safety action plan with the Operation Nighthawk team (Thanks to Peter Twyford aka Wombat from Darling Downs Region team) and the orthopaedic surgeon who Laura the all clear to go! Well done especially to Rodhana, Adam & Ellie for helping your team mates through and making it to the end.  Your leadership and caring natures were shining bright.

Also proud of Penguin patrol who had a very young group of scouts (only 2/8 over the age of 12).  You worked had together to with a few scouts under the weather as well.

Both patrols arrived back at camp after about 6hrs out on the course completing the 12km hike and all bases.  I’m not sure how much sleep everyone got as the temperature dropped below zero.  Maybe next year we’ll have some more blankets and tent warming gear. Oh and we might need an ice breaker after the washing up water froze too!

With the sun rising fast we headed to closing parade before making the trek home with a brief stop at Maccas for some lunch!

7th August – Nathan’s Investiture & Packing for Nighthawk

Tags

,

Tonight was a special one for Nathan as we invested him into the scout section.  Nathan comes from a multi-generationafamily with a passion for photography and off road 4WDriving.  So to make this ceremony extra special we organised to invest Nathan on the back of a ute!  Thanks to his parents for helping with the logistics.  As you can see from the pics it was a pretty cool investiture ceremony.

31st July – Nighthawk Preparation Activities

Tags

,

Thanks so much to our District Adventurous Activities Leader, Wombat, for coming and spending the evening with our PLs and APLs to teach them all about the skills associating with navigation and also for night hiking in preparation for Operation Nighthawk.  Meanwhile the rest of the patrols worked through three bases on various skills they would need for Operation Nighthawk including Scouting Histories, Promise & Law and Knotting.

24th July – Qlder Patrol Tent Construction

Tags

Who ever said a bit of wet weather would stop a scouting program?  When it comes to rain there are two options: put on a rain coat or find an alternative.  This week we were planning to learn about Queenslander tent construction.  Putting up tents in the rain when you’re not on camp isn’t much fun so we took this one inside.  For many this is the first time they’ve even seen one of these tents so it was a bit of fun.
