Bunnings BBQ

Our latest Bunnings BBQ, held on Saturday 10th January, was a great success!!

We raised almost $1300 for Victor Scout Group. A fantastic effort!

Thanks so much to:

  • Karen and Dave for organising the food and drinks and making it all come together on the day
  • Our wonderful parents, committee members and leaders who volunteered their time on the day
  • Bunnings Mt Gravatt for giving us the fundraising opportunity
  • The wonderful Brisbane Southside community who bought almost 45 kgs of snags from us
  • Special mention to leader Greg who wielded the BBQ tongs for a full 7 hours!

We’re always looking for more fundraising opportunities! If you have an idea, please let us know 🙂

Joeys lend a hand

Tuesday 04 November

This week was ‘do a good deed week’ for the mob. As part of learning about, and engaging within, their community, the Joeys undertook to do a ‘Good Deed’ for the Holland Park RSL sub-branch in preparation for Remembrance Day. The mob walked to the RSL where we met some lovely parents who had transported the rakes, brooms and gloves (and Melbourne Cup ponies) for the Joeys to use for their good deed. The busy Joeys were soon enthusiastically sweeping and raking the paths free of Jacaranda leaves and flowers for the RSL members. B-R-A-V-O Joeys for helping out so willingly.

After tidying up, it was time to unload the ponies for a few quick races, before riding our trusty steeds back to the den for some Melbourne Cup fun. YIS – Wolf and Bagheera.

All aboard the Joey Halloween Express.

Friday 31 October

Celebrating fun, friendship and Halloween was the order of business for the mob as we all went on a big adventure. From catching the bus in to Roma Street – a first for some Joeys, to seeing the Halloween Express, meeting up with Emu and the Joeys from Majestic Park for buddy fun and getting to dress up in spooky costumes – It was an action packed mob activity. Such fun!

The Joeys (and some sibling cubs) enjoyed a steam train ride through the Western suburbs in vintage wooden carriages, were entertained by the sights and smells of a steam train (wind and smoke rushing through open windows was a novelty) and were treated to a seemingly endless Willy Wonka style stream of goodies from the wonderful Railway Workshop volunteers. At the end, they got to inspect the steam engine and meet the engineers. Then it was back on to the bus for the trip home.

Thank you to all of the wonderful parents for assisting on the evening. It is always special for the Joeys to share their scouting experiences with you. Toot toot – Bagheera and Wolf.

Lights…Camera…Drama.

Tuesday 14 October

Drama and action came to Joeys this week. The Joeys romped through a mob meeting filled with puppetry, craft and Ging Gang Goolie drama.

First up, Wolf showed the mob some puppetry techniques and then they all had a go at being the puppeteer. Amazing what stories Joey imaginations can produce! Next they learnt about Baden-Powell and the story behind the traditional Scout song – ‘Ging Gang Goolie’. Each Joey learnt the song, created their own Great Grey Ghost Elephant mask and warrior headband. They all took part in acting out the story of the Ginga Ganga (village leader) and Heyla Shey (medicine man) triumphing over the Great Grey Ghost Elephant (Wolf). For those parents who haven’t already heard the song a million times, here are the lyrics:

Ging Gang Goolie.

Ging gang goolie goolie goolie goolie Watcha,

Ging gang goo,

Ging gan goo,

Ging gang goolie goolie goolie goolie Watcha,

Ging gang goo,

Ging gan goo,

Heyla, heyla sheyla

Heyla sheyla heyla, ho

Heyla, heyla sheyla

Heyla sheyla heyla, ho

Shalli walli, shalli walli, shalli walli, shalli walli

Oompah oompah …………..

To top off a fun filled night, each Joey made warrior shield iced biscuits to take home for supper.

Joey Mob rules!

Tuesday 07 October.
As a start of term reminder of the Joey Scout motto of – “A Joey Scout Cares, A Joey Scout Shares”, the Joeys finalised the mob rules that they created during SIAM (Scouts in Action month). The rules for Victor Joeys were added onto a poster and each Joey signed their name to show that they agreed to follow the mob laws. The poster is now displayed on the Joey notice board.
Thank you Joeys for really thinking hard about what the Victor Joey Laws should be. Wolf and Bagheera are both proud of what you all achieved!

All of the Joeys have worked hard to earn the ‘Their History, Our Heritage’ badges and these were awarded to each Joey. These can be worn on their right sleeve under their participation badges until 24 April 2015. Fantastic work Joeys!

Introducing the new Victor Scout Troop

Tags

,

We had a brilliant first night as Victor Scouts.  For those of you who don’t know much about the scout section it is referred to as a troop (just like Joeys have a mob and Cubs have a pack).  Scouts work in small groups known as patrols (similar to sixes) with a mixture of ages and skill levels.  The scout award scheme is similar in progression to cubs except that scouts have to demonstrate proficiency in all elements at each level before progressing and the higher levels are very much orientated towards teaching and helping less experienced scouts.  Much of the activities are focused around this award scheme to enable the development of all scouts in a fun environment.
Our first night there was lots of fun and laughter, exploring and working together to clean up around the den and discovering all the fabulous Victor scout history that exists.
After a game of Whose Shoe? and Dragon Heads & Tails our scouts then co-operatively and democratically decided to form Penguin Patrol and were super excited to discover an existing patrol box with a penguin emblem already!Penguin Patrol
 Thus far Penguin Patrol is made up of scouts of varying ages and experiences:
Anastasia will be the patrol leader (PL) until the end of term when she will go to Venturers.  She has been a PL for 2 years and has already earned her Australian Scout Medallion (the highest award in the section) which she will receive shortly;
Elliot will be an assistant patrol leader.  He has previously been a PL for the past year. He is working on his Explorer (blue cord) Award;
Joseph will also be an assistant patrol leader.  He has previously been an APL for the past six months. He is working on his Explorer (blue cord) Award;
Alex linked from cubs in Term 2 this year having earned his Grey Wolf award and is currently working on his Pioneer (red cord) award;
Natasha (Tash) is a Grey Wolf awarded cub who has just finished her link and will be invested next week on camp at Badgers Wood;
Olivia (Livi) is a Grey Wolf awarded cub who has just finished her link and will be invested next week on camp at Badgers Wood;
Jess – joined us for a trial visit to see if she liked the group and if it worked for her family.  She also earned her Grey Wolf award and has been in the scout section most of this year.
If you see the scouts be sure to say hi!
Penguin Patrol is supported by three leaders: Echidna (Sarah-Jane Gregory) as section leader, Komodo (Nigel T.) and Falcon (Greg H.) as assistant scout leaders who are very excited to form the leadership team for Victor Scouts supporting kids to do their best!  Both Echidna and Komodo are Wood Badge leaders having completed all their training in the scout section.  Komodo was also a scout in former days himself.  Falcon is working on finishing his skills training and Wood Badge.  Falcon has also been in the scout movement in various sections over the past 20 years!
The term program has many different and exciting things planned including Crazy Russian Hacker night (check out YouTube if you want to know who he is), backwoods cooking, water safety target badge at South Bank, Spooky Disco at Tarragindi and another camp at Mt Barney Lodge.  We’re also hoping to do a visit one night and say hi to the cub pack 
We will also be going on camp this coming weekend to Badgers Wood including participation in JOTI (Jamboree on the Internet), hiking through Noosa Headlands National Park and a special link ceremony and investiture at Peregian Beach at sunset (6pm) on Sunday 19th of October followed by a family BBQ in the parklands.  If you would like to join the scouts for the afternoon at the beach and the investiture ceremony you would be very welcome.  If you could let Echidna know that would be helpful (echidnascout@gmail.com).
We are also already excited about Jamboree 2016 Leap into Fun and planning requirements around this too.
All together a fantastic start and we are looking forward to many adventures together in the years ahead.

Yours in Scouting,
Echidna  Echidna

School Holiday (and Camping) Rules :-)

Well, it’s the last day of Term 3 (already?!), and I recently stumbled on this wonderful printable which has some great advice for our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts who are about to embark on school holidays, as well as District Camp and Cuboree!

Click on the link below and you can print it out to hang in a prominent position in your kitchen, campsite, anywhere!

School Holiday Rules

Have a great holiday everyone! See you back at Victor in a couple of weeks for an action-packed Term 4!

Fun under the sea at Skillorama.

What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday.  With 900 Joeys, nearly 200 leaders, parents and siblings, this years Skillorama was the place to be. And our Joeys loved it! From the rural fire brigade, badge club, giant sharks, murky tunnels, jelly fish production, fishing…phew. So much to do and, according to the Joeys, not nearly enough time.  There were a few very tired Joeys ( and parents/leaders ) heading home from Redcliffe at the end of the day.
