Advancements, Anzac Day, Moon Walking and Star Wars. Who wouldn’t want to be a Victor Joey?

Four Joeys become Cubs…

Wow, what  amazing achievement for our mob. With lots of hard work, nights visiting cubs and working on their individual Promise Challenge projects, 4 of the mob advanced into the cub pack.  There were 2 very proud Joey leaders and some even prouder joeys!  The mob took part in a Gross Fun Advancement night – armpit fudge, apple bobbing, a campfire filled with all of the 4 joeys favourite songs ( 20 000 feet, 3 chocolate éclairs, Hello my name is Joe) led on to Hawkeye taking them away to join the cub pack.  A very special supper and cake ended the very last Joey night for Oliver, Max, Jack and Travis.  Well done to you all and best wishes in the cub pack.

Anzac Day March and Parade

The mob joined the rest of group for the Anzac Day March and Service.  Ben and Adam were given the honour of laying the wreath for the Joey section during the service. They both did a brilliant job and respected the solemnity of the day. On the Tuesday, we continued learning more about the Anzacs and their service by reading a book about the landing at Gallipoli, hearing about why Australia was involved and partaking in  activities that reinforced what we had learnt. The mob then made damper.

Mothers Night

What happens when our mothers come along to Joeys for Mothers night?  They become honorary Joeys for the night and take part in ALL of the activities! And that is exactly what our intrepid and brave mothers did. Brainteaser questions, Bandelogs tails and shark island, clown dress ups for the malteser game and Hug-a-tree were all gamely played by the mothers before the joeys allowed them to have supper.  Luckily, the mob had made their mothers a lovely gift to show how much they care about them all – Fairy jars.

Hairy Charlie Experience.

Visiting some of our favourite Australian children’s books is always an excuse for a mob ight of costumes, drama and laughter. This term we chose ‘Hairy Charlie and the Pumpkin’ by  Dawn French.  The mob stuffed scarecrows, made Hairy Charlie beards to wear and then were entertained by Bagheera playing Hairy Charlie dealing with a very fast growing pumpkin vine AND chasing away a very pesky magpie played by Wolf. The Joeys thought they were hilarious!

Spirit of Anzac Centenary Exhibition.

The joey mob attended a very special exhibition called “Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience’ with the scout section from Victor and with our mob buddies from Upper Mt Gravatt plus the cub pack from UMG.  It was an audio guided exhibition that took us through World War One from the beginnings of the start of the war, through the increasing involvement of the Anzac troops, examining the various battles and armaments before reaching the conclusion with Armistice Day and commemorating those service men and women who were lost. The joeys were so respectful and learned  a lot from the exhibition and we were very proud of them. Many of the families visited the exhibition a second time as it was so thought provoking. District, Investitures, Joeys

The new scouting year started with a bang and the mob were very, very busy!  We shared a very special ceremony with one of our joeys, took part in district events, had a buddy sleepover, learnt about Scouting history (and our Joey Promise, Law and Theme), had a campfire, invited our families along to celebrate Harmony night and finished the term with Easter craft and cooking.

Special Advancement night ceremony.

The mob were privileged to share Samuels’ advancement night with him early in the term. This is an important event in our Joeys scouting adventure as it means that they have completed their linking activities and undertaken their Promise Challenge Badge (the highest National Award that a Joey can earn). Tonight’s theme was “The Great Grey Ghost Elephant” based on Baden-Powell’s  Jamboree story of how Ging Gang Goolie came about. The official ceremony was held at the end of evening with a campfire filled with songs and skits that Samuel helped choose (his favourite songs like He fell from 20 000 feet and Ging Gang Goolie) with Hawkeye joining us to lead him away into the cub pack.  The end of the night saw the mob farewelling Samuel with a shared supper and best wishes.

Founders Day and JACS Rally buddy sleepover.

Celebrations for Founders Day and the activity bases that follow for JCS Rally were combined with our first sleepover for the year with our friends at Upper Mt Gravatt mob. The mobs had a great time building friendships, sharing meals and having fun. The early morning district service for Founders Day led on to the rotations through some awesome activity bases that were run by district section leaders.  Thank you to Hawkeye for some of these fabulous photos.

New Joeys are invested on Harmony Day!

As part of the mobs activities for Harmony Day, we performed a very special ceremony for our 2 newest Joeys. Genevieve and Adam were invested on first parade and they were both very excited to officially become Victor Joeys. Their parents helped with the ceremony  by presenting them with their scarves and woggles. After parade, we held a number of activities to celebrate Harmony Day, promote the theme of ‘Everyone Belongs’ and earn our special event badge. Some of the activities were pretty hard to resist ( especially those marshmallows!).

Term 4 2015 just flew by for the Joey mob as we rounded out another fantastic scouting year with many badges earned, exciting activities and the Annual Joey Christmas concert.

Adventure Challenge badges completed.

The Joeys were very focused on completing their Adventure  Challenge badges this term with each of the older joeys successfully completing theirs.

Paper planes ( Nukamura folds and spy gliders) were created, hover crafts built and tested and catapults found many a target.

Spooky Halloween extravaganza.

Halloween was celebrated in true Joey style with a mob night filled with costumes, traditional Halloween games, treasure hunts and woggle making.  As you can see, the mob had a brilliant night and the smiles say it all.

One of the highlights of Term 4 was the night we invested our newest Joey officially into the mob.  Welcome Ben to your scouting adventure.

Annual Christmas Carols and end of year party.

Wolf and I were very proud of the Joeys when they performed the Christmas Carols that they had practised for their families on our last night for the year. There were a mix of traditional carols ( Jingles Bells, All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth) to classic Australian carols ( Give me a Joey among the Gum Trees ) and the all time favourites – 12 Days of Christmas and We wish you a Merry Christmas. And the parents weren’t left out. They all loved being cast as the reindeer in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  Santa also made an appearance just in time to give each of the mob a special Christmas present from Bagheera and Wolf along with their Christmas card and Scouts 2015 Christmas collector badge.

All of the mob were presented with the badges that they had earned this term – Buddy badges, Service badges and Adventure Challenge badges before we all shared a fantastic end of year supper.  The Joeys then gave their families the gifts that they had made – a  centerpiece for the Christmas table complete with tree decorations that they had also made.

Bravo to the mob for another amazing year and we will see you all again in 2016.

On the final night of term, it was all aboard with our mob buddies from Upper Mt Gravatt when we visited the Union Pacific Model Railway club.  The two mobs got to know each other through some great games – dog and bone, shark island and marshmallow relays – before they trekked through the park to the model railway.

And the looks on their faces when they spied the treasures within? Priceless!

WP_20150915_19_35_01_Pro

The members very kindly allowed the mobs to get up close to the village and models –

Not even the leaders were immune to the wonder of the railway.  Bagheera got to use the controller and blow the whistles and horns on the train, Wolf poked around the workroom, Eagle loved every minute and Rikki just looked chuffed!

With gloves, hats and a keen sense of wonder the Joeys visited Beelarong Community Farm on Saturday 12 September. WP_20150912_08_56_25_Pro

This visit was the final task in the mob earning their international ‘World Scout Environment Badge’ and what a learning experience it was!  The joeys met our guide for the day – Mitch.  Mitch was a scout in Canada (which the joeys loved hearing about) and was a fantastic guide for the joeys. WP_20150912_09_11_04_ProHe took them on a tour of the farm and explained the workings of a permaculture community farm to them WP_20150912_09_18_59_Pro– how a community farm works and what they grow, what a solar panel is, what is a compost heap, how a grey water system operates and most importantly, how a self composting toilet works.

The joeys were given the opportunity to practice their gardening skills and assisted the farm by weeding the seedling greenhouses and popping the collected weeds into the compost heaps.  WP_20150912_09_26_06_Pro

They also had a blast harvesting the potatoes for the community and as a reward were all given a bag of their freshly dug potatoes to take home!

WP_20150912_09_49_10_Pro WP_20150912_09_27_27_Pro

Watering the herb gardens as next on the agenda and the joeys loved seeing the many different kinds of herbs in the garden beds.

WP_20150912_10_15_31_Pro WP_20150912_10_10_42_Pro WP_20150912_10_05_41_Pro   More exciting was filling the watering cans from the rain water tanks. Then it was on to checking out the native bee hives with Kevin (the garden manager) and getting up close and personal with the worms in the worm farms.

Father's Day, Joeys

Father’s Day was celebrated in true Joey mob style with all of the dads (or carers) invited along to the mob meeting.

The dad’s were sworn in as ‘Honourary Joeys’ for the eveningWP_20150908_18_19_00_Pro and then had to prove that they knew what Joeys was all about by solving the answers to the rigorous quiz from our resident Scouting expert – Wolf.

The sun was shining, 1300 cubs and joeys were buzzing around and the stage was set for another fantastic Skillorama.  Victor Joeys, and some cub siblings, were ready for another adventure based on this years theme – ‘ Country and Farm’.

egg and spoon, milking the cows were just a few.  Between the activity bases, the joeys also managed to squeeze in visits to the woggle makers, air activity and environment teams stations, badge club, gem stone club and lunch.  Phew!  So much to do and so little time.

All the youth members went home exhausted but thrilled to have a badge and show bag to show everyone what a brilliant day they had. And I’ve heard that they all slept in the next day as an extra bonus for Dad on Fathers Day. Joeys, Scouts In Action

All of the Joeys worked very hard this term, and especially during August (which is Scouts in Action Month). The mob spent 4 weeks focusing on the environment and exploring a different theme each week with Bagheera, Wolf and Rikki.

The theme for the month – ‘Scouts in the Environment’ – allowed the Joeys the opportunity to discover the world around them whilst having a lot of fun. Recycling; Clean water, clean Air; Animals and their habitat; People in the environment (who works in it and why); the habitat in their own backyards and gardening and preservation/conservation all gave the Joeys the chance to learn new things and to really think about humans and the environment.

As Junior Joey rangers, they explored the environment around the den, the local neighbourhood, at BP Park and finally at Beelarong Community Farm – finding out what trees grow in their location, what kinds of animals live there and how they could help ( not littering, planting trees and attracting native animals to their gardens). The Joeys also made native bee hives from recycled tins and donated one to Beelarong as thank you gift.

WP_20150811_19_05_11_Pro

They each earned the following badges – Joey Environment Challenge badge and the Scouts in Action Month badge.

They also each achieved an international Scout badge that requires a lot of extra work and participation in a community activity: the World Scout Environment Badge. The final part of the badge is taking part in a local community activity. The Joeys visited Beelarong Community Farm for this final task.

B-R-A-V-O Joeys for all your hard work and a thank you to our families for their support with this badge work.

20150801_092518

Hear ye, Hear ye!  On the First day of the month of August, 800 Joeys and leaders advanced upon the site of BP Park to celebrate 25 Years of Joeys Scouts in Australia.  Jousting, Knight training, battlement scaling (aka rock wall climbing), treasure hunting and shield making culminated in a campfire and cake.  And some very tired, but very happy, Joeys.  20150801_101104

The day started with opening parade and Victor were given the honour of breaking the flag (we were asked personally by the Qld Joey Commissioner)!  Jack made us proud when he broke the flag.  Bravo Jack and Wolf.

This year Victor’s activity base was shield making and our parents stepped up and ran it expertly all day. Thank you for doing such a magnificent job.

With so many bases to visit and so many interesting things to make or do, the Joeys were spoilt for choice.  The mob visited the museum first (and spotted the Victor patch on the museums quilt), the admin tent, first aid station before heading off to the rope bridge.  Lunch involved cake to celebrate Wolfs’ birthday and immediately after, we lined up for rock wall climbing.

The photos will show you how much fun they had…

Abseiling, Buddies and medieval fun in term 3!

Joeys

During Term 3 the Joeys focused on the Environment and celebrated Scouts in Action month (August) with a month long celebration of the environment – at home, in their community and also the world.  But along the way, they also had some fantastic nights with Clifton Hill and Upper Mt Gravatt mobs, took part in Joey Jaunt and Skillorama, celebrated Fathers Day, checked out the Union Pacific Model trains and spent a morning in a community farm!

Horizontal Abseiling night.

What is Horizontal abseiling?  Read on to find out….

The mob started a new term with a night aimed at building friendship and developing the Joey law – “A Joey Scout Cares, A Joey Scout shares’.  Adventure and fun were the order of the night as the Joeys played games that involved working together and helping each other to complete the challenges.  After this, Dan led the Joeys through some abseiling training by ‘explaining the ropes’!  The mob learned about the buddy system, safety with ropes and harnesses, and were shown the knots that are used in abseiling.  Once all of the mob knew the rules and safety for the activity, Dan and Charlie helped each of the Joeys into a harness and then the ‘horizontal’ fun began. Horizontal abseiling involves using the same techniques that you need for regular vertical abseiling, but travailing across a horizontal surface ( eg hall floor, easement etc).  The Joeys absolutely loved the adventure of horizontal abseiling and it was a wonderful start to the new term.

Toohey District Joey Campfire.

Torrential rain, wind and winter cold couldn’t prevent the Joeys coming together for the district Joey campfire at Upper Mt Gravatt den.  Rather than a traditional campfire outdoors, the district leaders took the whole production inside and the result? A terrific night of campfire traditions by lantern!  Emu and Raven led the joeys through campfire songs, Raven and Bagheera performed some skits ( ask the joeys about the Big Chief skit!) and Bagheera helped the cubs with a very exciting production of ‘the Bubble-gum’ skit.  Energetic renditions of Three Chocolate Éclairs, Mamma Shark and Galumph meant that the joeys were all ready for the shared supper that followed.  Each joey and cub that attended were also given a campfire badge for their collection.  What a fantastic way to celebrate being a Joey on a cold wet night.

Buddy night walk with Clifton Hill mob.

Sixteen very excited Joeys from Victor and Clifton Hill went for a night walk in Toohey Forest as a way of introducing the two mobs and starting their Buddy Challenge badge. The Joey leader from Clifton Hill led the mobs along the tracks and the joeys all tried to spot wildlife with their torches.  Mid way around, we all stopped for a well earned break – drinks and snakes –

20150721_184749

before heading off to meet the parents at the drop off point.  For some of the Joeys, this was their first night spotlight walk and they all enjoyed the experience.

Medieval Fun.

With 2015 being a special year for the Joey section – 25th Anniversary – all of the mobs in SEQ were looking forward to Joey Jaunt this year.  And when it was announced that the them would be ‘ Joeys Scouts of the Round Table’ , how could we resist having a medieval buddy night too?  Clifton Hill mob visited us to move it ‘medieval’ style. Each joey made a medieval ID badge displaying their medieval Knight/Lady name and added a picture of themselves, before moving on to make their own shields ( they each had to design their own device design).  Stealth skills were employed in ‘Hug a Tree’ and spotlight outside.  Then all of the joeys donned bike helmets to learn pool noodle jousting with shields.  Huzzah to the fun had by all!  Thank you to Raven for lending us the pool noodles and shields.
